Sherlock story beat...

I managed to finish off one of the story beats for my little Sherlock project that I've been developing under the supervision of Jason Scheier. It ended up to be flipped horizontaly. I think I'm gonna go a bit more crazy style-wise with the other ones. Just to play around with different styles of rendering. 'Cause I kinda think that rendering the hell out of those story beats doesn't really make sense, if I can keep them more simple or sketchy and still get the message across. Instead of wasting time on rendering I could focus more on the design and originality...
And here's a little bonus gesture sketch of the dog;)

  1. I love the mood and sense of energy in this pic and the shape designs is great too (love the tree silhouettes!). The only slight crit I might have is from a storytelling perspective. I'm assuming that the character in the foreground is dropping the cigar out of shock, but the angle of the hand makes it feel more like he's in a duel and about to go for his gun. I think if his wrist was rotated up more and the arm was higher in the frame then the sense of surprise/terror might be strengthened. It's a real nitpick though and it's something you could reinforce in the next shot (extreme face close-up etc.). I'm loving the work you're doing for this class btw. Would you recommend it? I''m quite keen to do some online stuff like this.

  2. Hey Nick, thanks for the comment:) Yeah, I suppose you're right with the hand. I wasn't too sure about it either. I'll work on it a bit more and see if I can improve it...
As for the class, I like it a lot and I learned some new things about composition in movies etc. There's a lot of demos and great live q&a where you can see how Jason paint over peoples assignments. But I would say that it's more of an intermediate level and I think that you're doing a terrific job when it comes to storytelling and setting up a scene, so I think that you don't really need this particular class. For me it's also a great motivation to work hard on my personal stuff, but again- you don't seem like a guy that needs some extra motivation;) But the whole idea of online classes is great and I'm definitely going to sign up again for this kind of stuff, but this time choose a field that I really feel that I suck in, like anatomy or character design...

  3. I've been trying to work a bit on the hand, but it seems that I would have to change quite a lot in the central area of the image to make it work again with the new position of the hand. So I guess I'm going to leave this one as it is and use my brain a bit more in the future...;)
